Golf - How Good is Tiger?

Yesterday Tiger Woods played the worst round of golf I have ever seen him play.  He missed fairways, made bad decisions, and was notably limping all day due to the surgery he recently had done on his left knee.  He was at his worst and yet he forced an 18 hole playoff with a clutch birdie putt on 18.  Now he hasn’t wont yet but he is 10-1 lifetime in playoffs and I personally think the pressure is going to get to Rocco Mediate.  This amazing weekend Tiger had now forces people to ask themselves how good is Tiger Woods?

If Tiger wins this afternoon that will give him 14 career major championships.  He will have come in the top 10 in Major Championships 29 times and will be 14-0 when leading after 54 holes.  Jack Nicklaus won 18 Majors but finished in the top 10 a record 73 times.  In order to match that Tiger would need to finish in the top 10 in every Major from now until 2019.  So its likely that Tiger will never be able to match Jacks longevity but his dominance of the game is roughly the same.

But when you stop and look at what Tiger Woods has accomplished throughout his career it is absolutely astounding.  His ridiculous ammount of highlight reel shots.  Who could forget his amazing chip at the 16th at Augusta in 2005?  He brings a new level of awareness to golf and at his current rate will be the first athlete in history to earn $1,000,000,000 in career earnings and endorsement deals.

But besides all of the money it is the emotion and passion that Tiger brings to the game that make him such a great player.  The look on his face of sheer anguish when he hits a bad shot makes fans watching feel his pain.  And his million dollar smile when he wins and hits a shot he can’t even belive he hit makes everyone watching feel his joy.

The simple fact is that when he finally retires Tiger Woods may be the greatest golfer in history.
